Some Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roadworthy certificate (RWC)?
New to the Brisbane area? Or the first time having to get a roadworthy certificate or safety certificate. The following explains when and why you need to get a certificate of roadworthiness.
What are roadworthy requirements QLD?
Before getting a Queensland Safety Certificate you must get a roadworthy inspection first. Now known as a safety inspection. A Government-approved inspection station of your choice inspects important components. The authorised inspector checks the following components below. The check makes sure they are in good condition for their intended purpose and function. After the vehicle passes you get a certificate of roadworthiness. Now known as a QLD Safety Certificate.
When do I need to get a roadworthy certificate?
If you’re selling a car, motorbike, caravan, trailer or truck in QLD you must obtain a safety certificate before disposing of the vehicle. If the vehicle is unregistered and you want to re-register also if you have moved from another state and need to transfer registration. See our faq page for important updates on safety certificate changes by Queensland Government. The only time you don’t need a safety certificate is when you’re selling an unregistered vehicle. A safety inspection not only protects buyers of used vehicles by making sure the vehicle is safe to drive but reduces the likelihood of crashes too. This is why calling around to get the cheap dodgy roadworthy Brisbane service should be avoided.
How long does a roadworthy certificate last?
Depending on who is selling the vehicle the times vary.
For Private Sellers: 2 Months or 2,000km (whichever comes first) from the date the certificate is issued.
For Motor Dealers: 3 months or 1000km (whichever comes first) from the date the certificate is issued.
Remember: Safety certificates expire. This means you are buying an unregistered vehicle from the seller so make sure you check when buying a car.
